Re. Discord. Why the fragmentation between that one and the Slack channel? Don't they both solve the same problem?
d
The Discord was first by at least a year. However, not every Kotlin slack user has a Discord account and it didn't seem right to require Kotlin developers to make one just for my project. We also answer questions (though they come in thankfully infrequently) in the GitHub discussion area. You meet the market where it is!
e
I guess I'm generally against Discord just because it isn't publicly indexed, so to search you need to be logged in.
s
Neither is slack, is it? unless you resort to third party solutions which exist for discord as well. however for incubating frameworks that doesn't seem too relevant to me
e
This Slack instance is indeed publicly indexed.
s
yes but I believe it's also just a third party slack bot

True! But it was easy to create and I own it, full control. In contrast, this slack workspace is owned by JetBrains, so I didn't even think to ask them to carve out my own channel until Kobweb had a bunch of momentum behind it, at which point the Discord already had at least 100 users. Also, here, we have to basically jam all Kobweb messaging into a single channel (showcase, releases, questions, discussions) whereas in the Discord I have a lot of room to organize how I want. I even have room in the Discord server for my other projects (kotter, truthish).
I don't have time at the moment but something like this might be worth looking into?
e
No big deal for me, I was mostly just wondering and I get why you're using Discord now
d
Yeah it's a good question. Happy to share the reason here. It definitely happened organically. I wish it was easy to toggle a button to make it publicly indexable
c
@David Herman you may look into Matrix bridges. It allows syncing messages from multiple services. In the past it could sync to Gitter, which was publicly indexed, but I don't think it is anymore 🤔

Thank you!
