Hi, Im evaluating cmp performance on ios and its not what I was hoping for, but I know debug builds with compose on android are way slower than release. On ios, is this the same? If so, do I just change Scheme from debug to release and see the real perf?
k
Yes, it makes a lot of difference. We're seeing good performance on newer devices. However, older devices like the iPhone 12 sometimes still lshow hickups on release builds

Okay so while scrolling, especially the overscroll effect, you would not say its laggy - and its just simulator being weird? (Im trying the release, it better but not amazing) tldr; I know one should only eval perf on real device (I dont have one yet), but is simulator (on M1 Pro) way off than real device?
k
To be honest I haven't tried release mode on a simulator, so I can't give a conclusive answer for that. I would guess running from Xcode would still add some debug or performance lowering stuff even when running release. So best check would indeed be a real device preferably a built release for TestFlight or ad hoc. But I really don't know for sure if there would be a difference.

i see, thanks

Also be aware that the iOS simulator is basically just a MacOS window in the dimensions of an iPhone/iPad calling MacOS APIs thus Simulator and not compareable with the VM based Android emulator.

Good point!

@Chrimaeon yes hence I'd expect the performance to be better, not worse - and it is - even android emulator perfs better here

You can try some apps already on the store that use CMP (i can send links to mine just DM me to avoid breaking some rules, i never noticed any slowdowns my test device is iPhone 12 mini)

In my experience, ui-feel has been the same on comparable iOS & Android devices running the release version (scroll speed, animation smoothness, startup, etc). So if it looks ok on your Android and you don't have an iOS device yet, you should be ok.
