I always thought it was an idiomatic way of writing in Kotlin Gradle DSL. Now it's all deprecated in Gradle 9.6: https://docs.gradle.org/9.6.0/userguide/upgrading_version_9.html#kotlin_dsl_delegated_properties It's strange.

What's worse, the replacement provided by the documentation is not correct. I can't replace
val p: String by project
with
val p = project.property("p")
without additional
as String
casting.

Yeah, we need to build a library to bring back the delegate methods. Unfortunately, they decided to remove them for very non-sense reasons and are not listening to the voices demanding a revert. :-( But it was clear that this is coming, as for quite some time they also did not add new delegate methods where they would have been appropriate. https://github.com/gradle/gradle/issues/37604
