How can you generate a abi dump from a (custom) Jar file using the Kotlin Gradle Plugin?
not kotlin but kotlin colored 1
I found this issue https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/KT-80313/Add-ability-to-generate-dump-from-jar-files-ABI-Tools but the commit did not change any Gradle files

Hi, do you need to generate ABI dump for shadowed jar of the project?
h
No, I want to generate a ABI dump of an external/published jar file to compare it locally with my changes, eg publish 1.0.0 and compare it's with current development. I can download the jar with Gradle, but I have no idea how I can “start”/register a abi dump task.

BCV in KGP works only with current project. The use-case you described is quite rare, so it was not added as a universal DSL of KGP so as not to overcomplicate it. You may use special API for working with ABI dumps independently from Gradle: central.sonatype.com/artifact/org.jetbrains.kotlin/abi-tools-embeddable/2.4.0 In Gradle you can add this dependency to Gradle classpath and call
AbiTools.getInstance().printJvmDump(appendable, files, filters)
to generate a dump inside Gradle task

Thanks, will try it out!

why not use Build Tools Api operation instead? 🤔
h
@tapchicoma did you ask me? Because I don't know? 😄
t
it is a question to @Sergey Shanshin
s
Is it acceptable case to use BTA in user's build scripts? If yes- then ok, it's better to use Build Tools API
t
yes, the idea of BTA is public low-level API to Kotlin compiler ecosystem
FTR: here is the toolchain for BCV in build tools api. Currently it is only possible to work with build tools api on own (create configurations to resolve required artiacts, etc), but we want to give access to this low-level API in KGP: KT-87663 Expose Build Tools API access in Kotlin Gradle Plugin
