if size is not a big priority I would consider Dell Alienware laptops, they have very good expansion (ram not soldered, multiple ssd options) potential and CPU is really beefy. just not sure about linux support, was researching a bit, but did not find anything concrete.
n
If Linux support is a primary concern then a Dell XPS would be a safe option alongside the Lenovo Thinkpad T series laptops.
Dell don't provide official Linux support for the Alienware (consumer grade) laptops, but they do for the XPS (business grade) ones.

I have the XPS 13 at work running Arch Linux and never really had any issues with it

If you like linux, System76 laptops are pretty awesome. I love my Kudu, but most people go for the Oryx Pro. Https://system76.com
I've heard Dell XPS 13 is great as well. It looks to have superior battery life than System76 if that's important to you.

@fred.deschenes cool, great to hear good things about this machine! I need a 15 inch laptop, so my idea was to get Dell XPS 15 (with linux, of course 🙂. Have you heard any thermal or noise concerns for XPS 15 (it has a different CPU than 13)?
@thomasnield yea, I've been eyeballing Oryx Pro too 😉 How do you find the build on yours? How good are the thermals?
t
It's built nicely, not cheap feeling at all. It stays pretty cool. I owned a Syatem76 Galago Pro for awhile too which was a really nice machine. It just had a disappointing battery life of 3-5 hours.

@voddan: I don't know about the 15 inch one (and mine is 2 years old), but it doesn't get that hot. What I hate the most about it is the lack of ports (no HDMI, no ethernet, on a "developer" edition, wtf Dell???).

👌🏼

@fred.deschenes: Are you sure that you have a Laptop and not a Ultrabook?
Current laptops (NOT Ultrabooks) should still have a reasonable assortment of ports (especially for Ethernet, and USB); also they should have these removable components at a minimum: memory (RAM), internal storage (HDD or SSD), and battery.

well he asked about the Dell XPS

New Oryx Pro is up for sale. Advertising strong battery life compared to previous generations. Also looks amazingly slim especially for something packing that kind of power. https://system76.com/laptops/oryx

Wow! The new Oryx Pro is easily the most attractive laptop on the market. The only complain I can think of is the old-school screen bezels
