<@U092308M7> I got a new standing desk a few month...

@orangy I got a new standing desk a few months ago and put my late 2013 on it and noticed it was not sitting flat. Being an idiot, I immediately thought the new desk was warped, then another light went on: the battery had bulged. Got the whole machine rebuilt for $250. New battery, display, m/b, keyboard.
s
Where’d you have this done? Might come in handy in a few years if anything happens to my mid-2015
c
Apple. Before I noticed mine bulged I had read a lot of threads. Some people got their batteries replaced for free. Getting the whole machine replaced for $250 was great by me though.
s
ahh interesting, I’m surprised $250 was all they asked, but maybe that’s because of the battery thing
c
Trying to hang on do not want to spend $3K on one of the current MBPs. Maybe when the CoffeeLakes finally drop.
Oh yeah for sure, going in the Genius Bar guy told me to expect $500 and offered no explanation, of course I did not ask for one. I frankly don't think we need 32 GBs. But I also have a latest MBP (corporate issue for a project I am doing) that is fully loaded, and seriously, it does not feel any faster than my 2013, which is PATHETIC.. 🙂
s
eh, maybe? I think I’ll probably hold out until USB-C actually becomes commonplace or something, idk. I really like the machine I have right now, and honestly the only things I’d want from the new MBPs are the new screens, x-large touchpad, and fingerprint reader
everything else seems like a practical downgrade lol
aside from I guess the space gray coloring, that’s not half bad
c
amen, I would like the fingerprint reader.. it is kind of stupid that I want that given that A has put a bullet in its head for phones going forward..
s
ahhh I’m not personally 100% sure what Apple’s going to do with TouchID in the future. It’s not, like, unthinkable that they might bring it back if they can figure out how to put a secure reader under the glass
being able to offer Touch ID and Face ID in tandem would be a pretty decent selling point, imho
not that I’d set my own iPhone up like that if I had the opportunity - Touch ID only works fine for me, and is a lot more convenient in situations like paying for groceries or unlocking my phone for like my SO or whoever’s in the passenger’s seat while I’m driving
c
I read that the new phones will all be FaceID but that could turn out to be wrong..
s
We’ll see I suppose, Apple’s surprised us before
also wrt your work machine, I’m rather surprised that it doesn’t feel any faster considering how ridiculously fast the new NVMe SSDs are, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some quirk in something like their FDE solution or the slightly slower CPU package they’re using that negates the effect
c
interesting.. yeah maybe for really data-intensive things it is much faster and I am just not noticing..
the main thing I care about on a dev machine is how long it takes for tests to run
and better tools is the best solution to that problem and they are getting better..

I’ve got screen replacement for free a year ago, but now battery comes. Fortunately, our admins can replace batteries, and it costs about $50 to buy one.
c
I got a Windows laptop for my personal development machine, couldn't be happier.
It's a beast, fairly light, with a keypad (my laptops have to have keypads), large bright 15', probably around half a MBP would have cost
And of course... video games 😄
Also don't need to carry with me half a dozen of connector adapters.
s
@cedric I think you might’ve replied to the wrong thread
unless you popped into a discussion between two mac owners just to proselytize about your windows machine… lol
c
I am almost there @cedric, I for sure am not buying the current MBP, if mine goes tits up I will buy a used one probably..
there are a lot of choices now for Windows/Linux: Dell, HP, and Acer, Lenovo, etc.
the Mac team is lost in space, putting their likelihood of getting back on track about on par with Tyson after biting holyfield's ear off...
o
We have 16K+ members here, what chance is that there is at least one from Apple somehow close to macBooks department? 😄
c
@orangy as I said the 2013 is almost as good as the latest machine, so you are not missing much by keeping that thing alive..
good question, I wish they would wake up.. I have had a ton of macbooks and they were great machines, and clearly they revolutionized a lot of things about making machines, but they don't talk to power users at all, that's clear.. they are probably getting their directions belched out of Jony's mouth as he drives around in his bently drinking champagne..
I think apple thinks designers are the people who have money to buy a machine and all development has been sloughed off to low wage serfs..
o
May be Chromebooks with IJ running can make a wake-up call…
s
get Xcode running on a Chromebook and you’ll really light a fire under ’em
o
They’ll ban that apps
c
yeah that would be amazing
especially with the emulator start times they were showing at I/O for sure will buy one even if I still have an MBP..
