I never had issues like this on mac, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
😂 1
p
What I also see is that whenever IntelliJ needs to index files the progress bar runs to the end and then it completely freezes for 10 seconds rejecting any user input. It does this every time.
l
weird. maybe give it more RAM or somthing like that 🤔
a
I too have never had issues like that on a Mac. It does sound like a memory issue.
p
Even Chrome is much worse on Mac. Lacking features that are standard on windows, e.g. the little blue dot that notifies you that something changed in a pinned tab.
I guess you guys are just used to subpar applications.
a
Nope, only switched to the Mac 18 months ago after 15 years on various versions of Windows. Definitely ws not an Apple fan-boy, now you'd have to pry this from my cold, dead hands before I would think of going back 🙂
p
You dont mind that every thinkable keyboard shortcut is occupied by obscure Mac things and you can only reassign some of them? That drives me up the wall.
Or in Chrome, why does opening dveloper tool require the OPTION modifier but opening downloads wants the SHIFT modifier? How does that remotely make any sense..
a
Shortcuts did take a while to get used to but now much more productive.
p
Or how about how minimized windows does not appear after finding it with command+tab?
And how Bring All Windows to front does not actually bring ALL windows to front?
And how if you have three monitors you see the time and wifi connection icon on EACH monitor?
I expected so much more for such an overhyped system. It's a piece of garbage honestly.
a
Sorry, need to get on. Happy to provide IntelliJ assistance but don't have time for philosophical discussion
p
I understand.. just rambling 🙂
l
I don't think it's a piece of garbage but I couldn't get used to it as most of people do, soon I will be switching back to Windows. Especially because I feel less productive in multiple windows/monitors. Anyway I don't experience these Jetbrains Errors in my Mac and usually I have 3 different IDE's opened at same time, Android Studio, PyCharm CE and Intellij IDEA
what bothers me most is that you need special tweaks/macros to warp the mouse between monitors
p
I was really expecting and exceptionally well performing OS with top-notch user experience. What I got is something akin to 2008 Ubuntu running GNOME. That's what it feels like to me.
in Intellij, hovering over stuff brings up the tooltip only 50% of the time
Oh and it's really funny how you have to click twice on an non-active windows to do trigget click event but you can just hover to trigger the hover event.. so silly.
l
please then just go back to windows. no hard feelings 😉 I just bought a new WIndows machine for my wife. it is a horrible experience.
p
The thing is that Mac fanboys just cant help but feel so superior to everyone else but didnt notice that Apple is in 2010 with the OS
l
everyone has different requirements and taste. that’s just how it is. we’re just telling you that we’re not facing the same issues you are
👍 1
p
Most of the issues I mentioned are by design and not specific to my machine.
l
yeah but how is Apple responsible for Chrome shortcuts
p
Maybe if they didn't steal every thinkable shortcut for non-sense functionality Chrome devs would have sensible options.
l
and btw I agree that many parts in the OS are outdated. To me as a developer it’s still a better experience.
p
As a dev don't you need good multi-screen support?
l
yeah totally, seems like you don’t really wanna have a discussion
so I’m heading back to starbucks.
with my 13", btw
c
I use both Mac and Windows on a daily basis. MacOS is certainly not garbage but to me, Windows has become a superior OS for development these last years
p
I really like the hardware of 2016 MacBook Pro .. it's really solid although very expensive. I am just frustrated with the OS. I think I will try it with Windows 10 and see how it goes..
k
Every OS has its flaws. Windows has a terrible terminal. If you work on Android, I suppose this is ultimately not a big issue though. How often are you in the terminal? OS X also has a much better virtual desktop setup than Windows, but pretty bad multi-monitor and multi-window. And the keyboard shortcuts make absolutely no sense. In Windows and Linux, every modifier has a clear-cut purpose. In OS X, everything is overloaded onto the Cmd key. Overall I still end up sticking with OS X just because when I work on non-Android stuff, I want a proper terminal.
Windows 10 is really fantastic though, I have to say. Once you go through and disable all of the Windows ecosystem nonsense, it's probably overall the best OS I've ever used.
p
I hear these things about unusable terminal in Windows.. What do you mean? You can get unix-like terminal in Windows nowadays if you want and then just get ConEmu and you are golden. I feel like some Mac users have never used Windows 10.
c
@kevinmost Not sure what you’re talking about wrt Windows terminals, the ones I use are just as good as the MacOS ones (Terminal and iTerm 2)
k
Sorry, I don't mean the program itself. I mean
cmd
and Powershell. Maybe it's just that they don't feel right to me, coming from
bash
and
zsh
p
you can have
bash
in windows after enabling it in developer tools..
k
It's especially annoying when most of the instructions out there are written with *nix users in mind, and you would have to adapt them to your use case. I know Powershell is really a lot better than
cmd
, but it's still not really what I want
k
The Windows subsystem for Linux stuff sounds like a huge hack to me. Haven't tried it yet, though, so I guess I can't say
c
I use bash in one of the many terminal windows available on Windows, there’s really no loss in functionalities compared to MacOS
p
I see.. yes I guess we could agree on that the Terminal experience on Mac is smoother. At least it works out of the box.
c
I wouldn’t agree with this, experiences are similar in my experience
p
Ok 🙂 .. do you run Windows 10 on mac book pro Cedric?
c
Ugh no, what a strange idea. Just a regular Asus laptop
p
I don't see what's strange about it. It's just intel CPU and screen with keyboard
Another lovely thing.. right-clicking on Mac is broken..
If you hold the right click button and release it on a menu option it triggers it, instead of doing nothing. The context menu option should only be triggered by following left click. Otherwise you will do many accidental clicks in context menus.
k
that's a huge exaggeration to say it's "broken", and I have never accidentally clicked anything in a context menu. What scenarios lead you to end up doing this?
p
if you do a right click (press+release) and move the mouse during this to the right just a few px, it will immediately do the action in the context menu
try it
I guess after years and years when Apple finally decided to add right-clicking to their OS they just could not be bothered to understand how is it supposed to work.
k
Hm, I guess I can see that happening with a mouse. I either use the built-in trackpad, a Magic Trackpad at work, or a trackball at home, so none of these scenarios where pressing right-click results in my mouse actually moving a bit apply to me
p
yeah, I envy you that you are able to actually use the magic trackpad for work, that would drive me nuts.. at least you don't feel the pain of setting up a regular laser mouse in Mac (hint, front/back buttons wont work) .. because why should a mouse just work right..
and dont get me started on their shitty font anti-aliasing on non-retina screens... miles and miles behind what Microsoft had 15 years ago when they introduced ClearType
k
in general, using 3rd-party hardware with a Mac sucks. I completely agree. I have all of my hardware at work (DAC, Magic Trackpad, mechanical keyboard, Android phone, ethernet dongle) on a USB hub that gets plugged into a USB-C adapter that plugs into my Mac, and half the time it takes 5-10 minutes of plugging and unplugging to get it to actually start recognizing the devices. This has been the case for years, even pre USB-C. I'm assuming this is an OS-level fault as a result, not a hardware fault, but it's infuriating
they design their laptops to be used with no external monitor or peripherals, first and foremost. Everything else is an afterthought
I'll probably give WSL a try on my gaming PC. I would love to ditch OS X, if not for the terminal weirdness, honestly
p
wow that sounds awful.. I guess I agree that Mac MacBook Pro works really well as a unit until you want to plugin non-Apple peripherals.. then it is a very subpar experience
k
haha, never touched a Mac Pro. I only have experience with Macbooks
p
thats what I meant
