the magic happens in the annotation processing and compilation, essentially in the serialization gradle plugin

Thanks <@UBBFK40RZ>, that's what I was thinking.  I guess the IDE is just automatically triggering the annotation processor.  I noticed that when I removed the annotation, it immediately shows the red squiggle

the IDE plugin also has special integration with the kotlin compiler plugin
