what does it offer more than slack?

I think the main pull to Discord will be the 10000 message limit on Slack

But as a professional developer, I find most clients already are using Slack — so to me Discord feels unnecessary (yet another communication tool)

On the other hand… I know plenty of gamers who use Discord instead of Teamspeak/Skype. Those users will prefer Discord to Slack!
