Is this the place to discuss this feature?

I'd recommend disabling it by default until a better way is found. There are several problems: the hint symbols are not centered and look messy. The hint symbols actually give me more to think about as they don't really fit my mental model of ranges. I can't verbalize the hints and this is a big problem when teaching Kotlin in a class room setting. (just try to say x in 5 greater than down greater than 0)

ranges are a bittersweet upgrade on less consistent off-by-one targets imho.  i can see the rationale, but i agree with you that it's pretty knackered presently.
