I don't really get why Vasiliy needed to write an article that long about the topic, but that Robin dude in the comments is just spot on.

i find it interesting and it would not have been such a success without jetbrains investment it’s a win-win šŸ™‚

the troll again?
l
I seriously have no idea what kind of agenda he is following. He accused me of being an ā€œarrogant zealotā€ that follows an ā€œaggressive marketing strategyā€ once.
and on a side note: could we please stop talking about productivity when it comes to developing software? kthxbye
d
My take on "Why Vasiliy hates and diminishes Kotlin" He is an Android consultant/contractor. Somehow Kotlin rise will reduce his business chances. Obviously I don't have any proof of that but neither him when he claim out of thin air that Kotlin is just "10% better than Java"
He use twitter and reddit to try to convince people that Kotlin isn't that good
l
yeah I know. like I said, had a discussion with him as well…. 😩 I just don’t understand why How can kotlin threaten his business model? it can be a chance to support it (ā€œI help you with the transition to kotlinā€.
d
Totally, I think he is cornering himself.

Perhaps they don't wish to learn yet-another thing. Or are afraid to do so. Not everyone enjoys stepping out of their comfort zone. That is a mindset problem.
d
His strategy is quite clear. There aren’t many people that criticise Kotlin, so it is a good topic to get some attention, especially from ppl that are sceptic to all new things.

Look how many ppl are commenting here his articles compering to other more valuable one:)

Good point

Can we please stay away from using words like ā€œtrollsā€ or accusing people of being threatened or with some ulterior motive? This is a straight path to the kind of toxic community that killed Scala. Let’s just assume this person is a good guy who sees Kotlin in a different light than most of us and leave it at that

l
Definitely like that way of thinking, @cedric. Thing is though, if he can't clearly express his problems with the language itself, how are we supposed to inspect and adapt?
n
guys i don’t know the guy i like kotlin i saw not much in the article related to the technical merits and flaws most of it is in regard to the why, not the how honestly, i start to get afraid if this community feels threatened because of a single post which simply tries to provide an explanation as why a company would invest into designing a language after reading the post, my position has not changed toward kotlin 😃

I'm completely cool with the post! It's just that I have my personal experience discussing with him, and from his words it looks like Mario has, too. Anyway, I actually wanted to ignore it, just like Cedric suggested. But then this post came and I wondered whether it was the same guy I discussed with a while ago. Wasn't disappointed šŸ˜‰
d
my bad, we have discuss my use of "troll" previously. My response wasn't based alone on this article but in a broader context. His previous post was, rightly pointed but many members of this community, a bogus characterisation of Kotlin merits, masked on a faƧade of objectivity and pompous wording. After that post, that was shared here twice, he kept talking with people on social media about how Kotlin is just popular due to a marketing campaign not on its own technical merits. Because we decide as community not to call people troll, and I agree on that, but not knowing a better word for such behaviour from now on I'll try to ignore him. Call me out if I fail on it

We need a substitute for the word "troll". How about "undocumented criticism"? It's a negative opinion but hasn't been backed to the satisfaction of the community. Therefore no action or address can be taken.

@dh44t ok as i said, i don’t know the guy and obviously, i didn’t know the context (and i don’t even remember the name by the way šŸ˜‚)
