I was initially skeptical (I have a lot of X Terminal baggage), but looking at some of the cloud gaming platforms like Geoforce now or even Stream, it's a good alternative.

@carlw interesting.I'm not a gamer but from what I understand MS's new xCloud game streaming play is their stealth way of getting into streaming apps. From one article I read
Imagine running Adobe Premier on a Surface Go and having it rendered in Azure and then streamed back to your hardware; this is the future Microsoft envisions.
...so I'm trying to understand how that kind of trend (and Apple's own variation, whatever that is) would affect those of us indie developers interested in cross-platform desktop development.
Will these new architectures make it easier or harder to build something on, e.g. JVM, and then leverage new distribution techniques, licensing systems, etc.

Depends how open it is. There's a chance of platform independence being given at the expense of ecosystem independence. For instance, if you use Steam to develop an app for multiple platforms, you pay a self-publishing fee that's good for now, but can be raised later.
