I migrated my personal projects to use version catalogs + renovatebot. I like the PRs for version upgrades, and version catalogs work really well with the gradle build cache (at least in my project) so builds are really fast most of the time

Does this mean we wouldn't use refresh versions anymore?

Yes. Refresh versions has been great to use though. But I think getting the upgrades automatically from PRs which in turn triggers a full CI build is more powerful.  And I think it has been more performant as well. Can make a PR branch that we can use for comparing a bit if you want. 

I'm happy to switch it around as I'd be curious to see how the version catalogs works
